Date Day + Watermelon Radishes

Right now I'm totally basking in the joys of the past few days. I can't believe I still have things built up from this past weekend to blog about. SCHOOL BREAK IS THE COOLEST. I can't believe that this coming summer will be my last summer break ever. I'm super lucky that I get to make school breaks last until I'm 25+, but alas, all good things must come to an end.

This past weekend, the hubby and I galavanted around all day. He discovered this cool place online called Greater Boston Buddhist Culture Center.

They serve food every day on a super limited menu. You can go there for lots of different kinds of tea, a short list of appetizers, and one vegan special. All the food there is vegan with the exception of some of the milk teas. The food is incredibly cheap: $4 appetizers, $7.95 lunch special. If you're in the Boston area, you've got to check this place out!

Every meal starts with a free mushroom broth soup (not my favorite, but soothing nonetheless). In addition, we enjoyed an appetizer of steamed dumplings along with our veggie lunch specials. Everything was packed with flavor, and you could tell that the food wasn't cooked with a lot of oil or heavy ingredients. Fresh and delicious.

Steamed broccoli, mixed veggies in a spicy sauce, sticky rice (I think it was white rice, but seemed like some odd hybrid of white and brown rice), steamed cabbage, and sesame silken tofu.
After our lovely lunch, we rented a Zipcar, since our house was empty of groceries and we needed to get a huge load. We ventured to Cambridge to hit up Trader Joes and Whole Foods, and we came home with quite the haul. We also still had veggies that had been delivered from Boston Organics that we hadn't done anything with yet, so I set off on a roasting extravaganza.

Our house on any given weekend: watermelon radishes, carrots, turnips, and potatoes. See that pumpkin powerbake making an appearance in the back? OH YEAH.
HOW GORGEOUS ARE THESE WATERMELON RADISHES?!

Natural beauty at its finest. Unbelievable. I roasted these up at 400 degrees for about 25 minutes. Per usual, I threw them all in a huge tupperware for my weekly dose of powerbowls. I created a masterpiece for dinner that night:

Black bean noodles, roasted carrot, turnip, and watermelon radishes, broccoli, brussels, grape tomatoes, green bell pepper, roasted squash, and avocado. Topped with whole foods deeply roasted sesame dressing, hummus, and nutritional yeast :)
I have to admit, however, that I was a bit disappointed by the pretty little watermelon radishes - they were actually quite bitter. Is this normal? Were they just overcooked? This was my first time eating them, so I'm not giving up hope.

Coming up this week:

  • My [epic failure] juice cleanse and how I altered it
  • My rest week from the gym and how my body is LOVING it

Nutritionally,
Avocado Athlete
